First select the plants you wish to use in your design, giving consideration to whether the basket will be in a sunny or shady location. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to select plants with similar growing requirements. The size and number of plants will depend on the size of the basket you have selected, and how quickly you need the basket to be ready for show.
Next, fill the basket to within two to three inches from the top rim with a high quality commercially available potting soil. Be sure to select one that has peat moss, bark, perlite, or some other water retaining material. (If starting from cuttings, fill the planter right to the top). See chart below. Place the plants in the basket according to your design, starting in the center, and working to the outer rim. Press in firmly but gently, and then fill almost to the top with soil. It is a good idea to press two or three slow release fertilizer tablets about ½" to 1" into the soil mix at this time, following the manufacturer’s directions.
Water the basket thoroughly, so that the soil level settles to within ½" to 1" from the top of the liner, creating a shallow reservoir.
